Tour Details

Trek to Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco is an off the beaten path experience in Peru. It is a lesser known and recently discovered archaeological site in the south of Cusco. However, the full day trip from Cusco is rapidly gaining popularity just as the Sacred Valley or Rainbow Mountain trip.

In Quechua, the native language, Waqrapukara is a combination of two words – Waqra means horn and Pukara means fortress. The horn fortress gets its name after the way it looks. The complex is located in the Acomayo Province above the Apurimac canyon at 4300 metres above sea level.

On this Waqrapukara Trek with a local guide you will discover some of the astonishing facts about Inca civilization. You will also get a first hand experience of the local community that lives here.

People here have preserved their age-old traditions and customs. They continue to converse in Quechua.

The experience begins with a three hour drive from Cusco to a small Andean town called Wayki. This is the starting point of Waqrapukara trek. From here, you will be hiking 550 metres up to the Inca fortress.

The trek offers breathtaking views of the Apurímac River. You will also get to see the well preserved cave paintings on your way up.

At Happy Gringo Tours, we have dedicated tour guides who have an extensive knowledge about the complex and its history. Our guides are also trained in first aid.

Please note that this is a high altitude trek. We highly recommend you to spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness

Itinerary

Day 1Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco Trek

We will be picking you up at 0400 AM from your hotel in Cusco. Then in our private transport, we will be driving you through the South Valley of Cusco to Wayki.

On our way, we will have a brief stop on the shores of Pomacanchi lagoon. Here you will have some time to immerse in the tranquility and see the sunrise. We will also have breakfast here, before continuing the drive.

Once in Wayki, our guide will give you some tips on hiking. We will then begin with a gentle uphill hike to Waqrapukara. It is a three hours hike along the Apurimac River.

We will give you a guided tour of the complex. On this short tour, we will be visiting the Sungate of Inti Punku, Torreneos, which are some towers next to the main square. We will also be visiting the platform and premises of Inca God, Viracocha.

After the tour, you will have some free time to explore the fortress on your own.

We will then hike back to Wayki. Here we will be having lunch. We will then embark on a three hours drive back to the City of Cusco. We will be reaching Cusco at around 06:00 PM.
