Trek to Waqrapukara Acomayo Cusco is an off the beaten path experience in Peru. It is a lesser known and recently discovered archaeological site in the south of Cusco. However, the full day trip from Cusco is rapidly gaining popularity just as the Sacred Valley or Rainbow Mountain trip.
In Quechua, the native language, Waqrapukara is a combination of two words – Waqra means horn and Pukara means fortress. The horn fortress gets its name after the way it looks. The complex is located in the Acomayo Province above the Apurimac canyon at 4300 metres above sea level.
On this Waqrapukara Trek with a local guide you will discover some of the astonishing facts about Inca civilization. You will also get a first hand experience of the local community that lives here.
People here have preserved their age-old traditions and customs. They continue to converse in Quechua.
The experience begins with a three hour drive from Cusco to a small Andean town called Wayki. This is the starting point of Waqrapukara trek. From here, you will be hiking 550 metres up to the Inca fortress.
The trek offers breathtaking views of the Apurímac River. You will also get to see the well preserved cave paintings on your way up.
At Happy Gringo Tours, we have dedicated tour guides who have an extensive knowledge about the complex and its history. Our guides are also trained in first aid.
Please note that this is a high altitude trek. We highly recommend you to spend a few days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness.
