Day 1Cusco - KM 104 - Wiñay Wayna - Sun Gate - Machu Picchu

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then, in our private transport, we will drive you through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the Ollantaytambo train station.

Here, we will board a tourist train bound for Aguas Calientes at 6:10 AM. We will be getting off at Km 104. The trail begins amidst the cloud forest, where you can see a diverse array of flora and fauna.

On this 10-kilometre stretch, we will visit many Inca ruins. Then, we will reach Wiñay Wayna, one of the most prominent Inca sites in the area. After a guided tour of the complex, we will visit Sungate (Intipunku). From here, you will get the first sight of the Machu Picchu citadel.

Once inside the Machu Picchu citadel, you will receive a two-hour guided tour. After the tour, you will have some free time to explore the citadel on your own. If you have booked to hike Huayna Picchu or the Machu Picchu mountains, our guide will direct you to the trailhead.

Alternatively, you can hike to Sun Gate or Intipunku. This is the entrance to the citadel for those on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

After exploring Machu Picchu, you will take a bus back to Aguas Calientes. Here, we will have lunch at a local restaurant. At around 04:00 PM, we will take a train back to Ollantaytambo.

Our representative will meet you on arrival and transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco. We will return to Cusco around 09:30 PM.

  • Trekking the Inca Trail is a highlight of the trip.
  • You can enjoy the views from the Sun Gate, similar to those from the Great Wall of China.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE 1 DAY INCA TRAIL EXPRESS

Essential Documents

  • Passport
Your original passport is mandatory. Rangers will verify it at the Chachabamba checkpoint and again before boarding the train. It must match the passport used when booking your Inca Trail permit.
  • Student ID (if applicable)
Travelers who booked with a student discount must carry their valid student card. Without it, the authorities will charge the full adult rate at the entrance.

Bags & Gear

  • Daypack (around 20–25L)
A medium-sized backpack is ideal for carrying your essentials. Very large backpacks are not allowed inside Machu Picchu and must be stored in the onsite lockers (approx. 5 soles).
  • Trekking Shoes
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with a good grip. The trail is stone-paved and can be slippery, especially in humid sections.
  • Running Shoes (optional)
Comfortable sneakers are perfect for switching into once you finish the hike and begin exploring Machu Picchu.
  • Hiking Poles with Rubber Tips
Recommended for travelers with knee sensitivity or those not used to hiking. Rubber tips are required to avoid damaging the trail.
  • Power Bank
There are no charging points along the route, so bring a portable battery to keep your phone or camera powered for photos and videos.

Hydration & Snacks

  • Reusable Water Bottle
Single-use plastic bottles are prohibited in Machu Picchu. Bring a reusable bottle or hydration bladder.
  • Water (minimum 2 liters)
The Short Inca Trail is warm and sunny in several sections. Staying hydrated is key.
  • Snacks
Even though we include snacks, bring extras if you get hungry easily. Energy bars, dried fruit, chocolates, or candies are always good options.
  • Electrolytes (optional)
Great for hot days or steep parts of the trail. They help replenish minerals and boost energy.

Clothing for the Trail

  • Sun Hat or Cap
The first part of the hike is exposed to the sun. A hat will help protect your face and neck from UV rays.
  • Sunglasses
Mountain sunlight can be intense, especially around midday.
  • Long-Sleeve Lightweight Shirt
Breathable, quick-drying long sleeves protect you from both sun and insects.
  • T-Shirts (bring at least two)
The trail is warm, and most travelers sweat. Having an extra shirt for Machu Picchu is ideal, especially for photos.
  • Fleece Jacket
Morning temperatures can be cool. A lightweight fleece is perfect for layering and comfort.
  • Trekking Pants
Quick-dry pants are much better than jeans if it rains—they stay lighter and dry faster.
  • Rain Jacket
Weather in the Andes changes rapidly. A compact rain jacket is essential in all seasons.

Toiletries & Personal Items

  • Hand Sanitizer
Useful for stops along the trail or when bathroom facilities are limited.
  • Toilet Paper
Some restrooms and trail areas do not provide toilet paper, so bring your own supply.
  • Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes are present year-round, especially from July to September. A good repellent will make your hike more comfortable.
  • Sunblock
UV radiation is strong in the Andes. Apply sunscreen throughout the day.
  • First Aid Items
Although our guides carry a complete first aid kit, they cannot administer medication. Bring personal items you may need, such as pain relievers or altitude tablets.
  • Moleskin or blister treatment
Useful if you develop hotspots or blisters during the hike.

Extras & Optional Items

  • Camera or Phone
The route offers spectacular photo opportunities, especially as you approach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).
  • Binoculars (optional)
If you enjoy birdwatching or want to observe details of the landscape, binoculars enhance the experience.
  • Money in Peruvian Soles
Credit cards are not widely accepted around the train station or in small shops. Bring cash for snacks, souvenirs, or bathroom fees.

ADDITIONAL INFO FOR INCA TRAIL 1 DAY

Daily Permit Availability

Access to the Short Inca Trail (Km 104) is strictly controlled.
Only 250 people per day are allowed on the route, and this total includes travelers, licensed guides, authorized porters, and support staff.

Once the daily limit is reached, no additional bookings can be made, and permits cannot be reserved or held without payment.
Because availability is limited, purchasing your permit months in advance or even a year ahead is strongly recommended.

Things to Know Before You Book

  • Not recommended for travelers with back problems
The trail includes stone steps, uneven terrain, and steep sections.
  • Guided experience
A professional guide will accompany you along the Short Inca Trail and continue with you during your Machu Picchu tour.
  • Daily departures with a minimum of 2 travelers
We operate every day except in February.
  • No departures in February
The trail is closed for annual maintenance.
  • Not accessible for wheelchairs
Terrain is steep and narrow with no alternative accessible routes.
  • Essentials you must carry
Original passport, personal travel insurance card, and any medications you normally take.
  • Small group experience
The Short Inca Trail groups are limited to a maximum of 8 travelers to ensure comfort, safety, and personalized guiding.

Strikes & Travel Disruptions

Strikes and road blockades can occur unexpectedly in Peru and may affect transportation or train operations.

If a strike interferes with your scheduled start date, we will reorganize your logistics to ensure your trip continues with as few changes as possible.

If a strike occurs on the first day

To guarantee your hike:

  • You will be transported to Aguas Calientes the night before your hike.

  • Accommodation for that night will be at your own expense.

  • The following morning, you will walk approximately 1.5 extra hours to reach Km 104, where your Short Inca Trail hike officially begins.

After your visit to Machu Picchu

If the strike continues:

  • You will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and spend the night there (hotel at your expense).

  • The next morning, you will hike 3 hours to Hidroeléctrica.

  • From Hidroeléctrica, our private transportation will drive you back to Cusco (approx. 7-hour drive).

We will always prioritize your safety and do everything possible to carry out the experience.

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance.
It can reimburse:

  • The cost of your non-refundable Short Inca Trail permit in case of last-minute cancellations.

  • Medical expenses for unexpected illnesses or injuries during your trip.

Travel insurance is a small investment for peace of mind in a remote, high-altitude destination.

Weather on the Short Inca Trail

The weather in the Andes can change quickly and unexpectedly.

Dry Season: April to October

Sunny days, cooler mornings, and ideal hiking conditions.

Rainy Season: November to March

More frequent rain, mist, and slippery stone paths.

However, rain can fall during the dry season and sunshine can appear during the rainy months—prepare for both.

What you should bring for any season:

  • Rain jacket and waterproof layers

  • Poncho

  • Waterproof gloves

  • Down or warm jacket for early mornings and evenings

  • Clothing you can layer easily

Expect to experience all four seasons in a single day.

Yes. During your Short Inca Trail adventure, you can leave your luggage safely at:

  • Our office in Cusco, or

  • Your hotel, if they offer storage

We recommend bringing only what you need for your one-day hike and Machu Picchu visit.

Can I Change My Departure Date After Purchasing Permits?

Unfortunately, no.
Once the government issues your Short Inca Trail permit, the date cannot be changed, and the permit cannot be transferred or refunded.

The only modification allowed is an update of your passport number.

How Difficult Is the One Day Inca Trail?

This route is considered moderately challenging to difficult due to its steep stone steps and continuous ascent.
We recommend being in good physical condition and having experience walking on uneven terrain.

Do I Need to Bring My Original Passport?

Yes — this is very important.
Your original passport is required at:

  • The Short Inca Trail checkpoint (Km 104)

  • The entrance to Machu Picchu

  • The train station (before boarding)

It must match the passport used to reserve your permit.

Updating Passport Numbers

If you are renewing your passport:

  2. If you no longer have it, send any government-issued ID with the same name.

  3. Once you receive your new passport, email us a copy immediately so we can update your permit.

Train Ticket Schedule

Train schedules depend on availability.
We generally book:

  • Outbound train: 06:10 a.m. from Ollantaytambo to Km 104

  • Return train: 02:55 p.m. from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo

This timing allows you to return to Cusco around 6:30 p.m., giving you plenty of rest for activities the next day (like Rainbow Mountain).

Can I Stay in the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo or Urubamba Before My Tour?

Absolutely.
Staying in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo is a great option, and it offers an extra benefit:

  • Your pick-up time will be 1.5 hours later than Cusco pick-up.
More rest → Better energy for the hike.

Happy Gringo Tours will coordinate your exact pick-up location once your hotel information is confirmed.
