Laguna Humantay or Humantay Lake Peru Day Trip is a trip to a new natural wonder in Cusco Peru. Located in the village of Mollepata, below the glacier mountain that gives its name, Humantay.
Lake Humantay is a hidden gem. For a long time, Laguna Humantay was part of the alternative hike to Machu Picchu, Salkantay Trek.
Just as Rainbow Mountain, Lake Humantay Trip has now become a popular full day trip from Cusco.
If you are planning on doing Inca Trail or Salkantay Trail, we highly recommend visiting Laguna Humantay before the trail as this would help you acclimate to the high altitude.
We also recommend you to spend four days in Cusco City before the Humantay Lake Peru Trip to avoid altitude sickness.
Happy Gringo local tour operating company offers trips to Humantay Lake Peru both in private and in small groups. It is recommended to reserve the tour months in advance. If you haven’t decided yet, you can read our blog about the highlights of the Humantay Lake.

Cusco Hotel Transfer
0400 AM
At 0400 AM, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then in our private transport, we will embark on a three hours drive to Mollepata. Here we will be stopping for breakfast.
After breakfast, we will continue to Soraypampa where the Humantay Lake Peru experience begins. It is a 1.5 hours hike up the hill through the highland Andean villages. You will be rewarded with sights of Andean camelids grazing.
Once we reach Humantay, we will be spending a lot of time on the shores witnessing the ethereal beauty. Later, we will start descending to the same place where we started the trek for lunch.
Soak up the stunning views before you return to Cusco for a refreshing cold chicha drink (a fermented or non-fermented beverage usually derived from maize in Mollepata).
The best time to visit Humantay Lake is be during the dry season, from April to October. Trekking on rainy season November to March along the Andes is more brave, defiance but more colorful – why? Because during the rainy season the Peruvian Andes is blooming.
During the dry season, the weather is cold, strong winds but there is no rain whatever, the path is not muddy or wet either. Get yourself really warm clothing, good hiking equipments and you will be satisfied of being in Humantay trek.
Humantay Lake is 75 miles (120 kilometres) to the northwest of Cusco city. To get there, you will need to reach Soraypampa which is roughly 67.5 miles (108 kilometres) from Cusco. From Soraypampa, it is a one and a half hour’s hike to reach to Humantay Lake.
If you are not willing to hike, you can rent a horse from the starting point of the trek.
Yes, it is totally worth visiting Humantay Lake on a full day tour from Cusco. Not just because of its popularity the lake also offers stunning views of the Peruvian Andes as it sits snuggled between Salkantay and Humantay mountain.
The only way to reach Humantay Lake is by hiking from Soraypampa. However, if you are not willing to hike, you can rent a horse from the starting point of the trek. Make sure to negotiate the price before renting one.

Our vacation was great to the land of the Incas in Perú with Gringo Tours.
We strongly recommend traveling... read more in Cusco. We had an amazing experience.. Thanks to our guide Juan!
We highly recommend booking the Machu Picchu day tríp from Cusco with Happy Gringo!
Everything else was a dumpster fire that had us waiting for two hours for a guide to show up (he stated he hadn’t been notified from the travel agency even though we went to the physical Happy Gringo location to check in the day before AND provided all requested information in person and again via WhatsApp). If we hadn’t reached out to them on WhatsApp, I’m certain we would have still been standing outside of the train station waiting. The information you get when you get to the Machu Picchu location is also confusing, telling you to go to a Pueblo, but when you look it up on the maps, there are several listed, which further added to the confusion. Very much underperformed our expectations for nearly $800.
Final thought, Machu Picchu is very much worth the visit, but not with this outfit.
