Huayna Picchu Mountain

Huayna Picchu — the striking peak rising just behind Machu Picchu — offers one of the most breathtaking views of the ancient citadel. With Happy Gringo Tours, we take care of your entry tickets and scheduling to ensure your preferred date and time are secured. Because access is limited to only 300 visitors per day, booking early is a must.

If you’re joining our Short Inca Trail 2 Days, your Huayna Picchu climb is usually set between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., right after your two-hour guided tour of Machu Picchu. The hike itself takes about two to two and a half hours round trip, including a steep 60-minute ascent and a 45-minute descent. Along the way, you’ll find fascinating Inca terraces and stone constructions still being studied by archaeologists. Be aware — the trail is steep, narrow, and includes sections where you’ll need your hands for balance. It’s an unforgettable but demanding adventure, recommended only for those comfortable with heights.

Machu Picchu Mountain

Towering at 3,082 meters (10,111 ft) above sea level, Machu Picchu Mountain stands south of the Inca citadel and offers a different kind of challenge. Unlike Huayna Picchu, this hike features a wider, less steep trail with traditional Inca stone steps, making it ideal for travelers who prefer a moderate climb with equally spectacular views.

Permits are limited to 250 per day — split into two groups: 7–8 a.m. and 9–10 a.m. For guests joining our Short Inca Trail 2 Days, we typically secure the later entry, so you can hike after your guided visit to the citadel. The full hike takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, including 1.5 hours to ascend, 30 minutes at the summit, and an hour to descend. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Urubamba Valley, the surrounding peaks, and Machu Picchu itself — a sight you’ll never forget.

Note: During your 2-day Inca Trail program, you can choose either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, but not both, as visiting times overlap.

Vistadome or Vistadome Observatory Train

Your Short Inca Trail 2 Days package includes round-trip transportation on the Expedition Train, designed for travelers who value comfort and scenic beauty. However, you can elevate your return journey by upgrading to the Vistadome Observatory Train — a first-class experience with panoramic windows, glass ceilings, and cozy seats that let you take in every detail of the Andean landscape.

Onboard, you’ll enjoy a cultural touch with live dance performances, fashion shows, and a light snack service — the perfect ending to your Machu Picchu adventure.
Please note that the Vistadome option applies only to the return leg from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, since the earlier departure time of the Expedition Train (06:10 a.m.) ensures you start your hike on time. The earliest Vistadome train departs at 07:05 a.m., which would shorten your trekking window.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are optional but highly recommended, especially if you have knee concerns or limited hiking experience. Even seasoned trekkers find them helpful for maintaining stability and reducing strain during the ascent and descent. If you don’t bring your own, you can rent them from the agency.

Keep in mind that walking sticks are not allowed inside Machu Picchu or on Huayna Picchu Mountain. Your guide will collect them at the citadel entrance and store them safely in Aguas Calientes. The next day, you’ll visit Machu Picchu without the poles, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience and capture great photos with no restrictions.

Upon arrival in Santa María, lunch will be served, followed by free time to explore the village or join an optional white-water rafting adventure in the afternoon. In the evening, we will enjoy a well-earned dinner and rest. Optional activity: Rafting in Santa María (Class III–V rapids) is available for an additional USD 45.

Day 2Santa Maria - Santa Teresa

The second day of the Inca Jungle Trail begins at 7:00 a.m. with a delicious local breakfast and freshly brewed coffee. We start hiking around 8:00 a.m., and after approximately 45 minutes we connect with the original Inca Trail. As we walk, you’ll experience one of South America’s richest biodiversity zones, surrounded by lush vegetation, diverse wildlife, and stunning natural scenery. After about three hours of trekking, we arrive in the town of Quellomayo, where lunch will be served and you can relax in hammocks before continuing the journey.

In the afternoon, we continue hiking for another three hours, crossing farms, rivers, and beautiful waterfalls. Around 4:00 p.m., we reach Cocalmayo, also known as the Santa Teresa hot springs, where you’ll enjoy a relaxing soak in the warm thermal pools. Afterward, we hike for approximately 50 minutes to the town of Santa Teresa, where we spend the night. Day 3Santa Teresa - Hydroelectric - Aguas Calientes

Today we will serve breakfast at 6:45 am. After breakfast we will continue exploring the routes followed by the first explorers who discovered Machu Picchu.

Santa Teresa is popular for zip-lining adventures. The group will take the activity where they will spend around two hours zipping across the valley, enjoying spectacular scenery as they fly by.

After the activity you will be taken by bus to the area known as Hydroelectric station. Where we have lunch. After a break we continue hiking along the railway, enjoying beautiful waterfalls, coffee and coca farms and much more. After 3 hours walking we will reach the town of Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo late in the afternoon.

Day 4Machu Picchu – Cusco

Early in the morning, we will hike for approximately 1.5 hours to the Machu Picchu Citadel. Our guide will assist you through the security control and help you enter the site smoothly. Once inside, you’ll witness a truly magical moment as the clouds slowly lift and the first golden rays of sunlight illuminate the ancient stone walls of Machu Picchu.

You will enjoy a 2-hour guided tour, learning about the history, architecture, and mysteries of this iconic Inca city. After the guided visit, you’ll have free time to explore on your own. Travelers with pre-booked hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain will be guided to the correct trailhead. Alternatively, you may choose to hike to the Sun Gate (Intipunku), the original entrance used by Inca Trail hikers.

After exploring Machu Picchu, we will hike back down to Aguas Calientes, where lunch will be served at a local restaurant. At around 4:00 p.m., we will board the train to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco, arriving at approximately 9:30 p.m.
