Travel Information – Peru & Machu Picchu

Planning a trip to Peru is exciting — and being well informed will help you enjoy your journey with confidence. Below you’ll find essential travel information to help you prepare for your adventure with Happy Gringo Tours.

Entry Requirements

Most travelers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the European Union do not require a tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Peru.

We always recommend checking with your local Peruvian consulate before traveling.

Altitude & Acclimatization

Cusco is located at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level. Some visitors may experience mild altitude symptoms such as headache, fatigue, or shortness of breath.

To help your body adjust:

• Arrive at least 1–2 days before major tours
• Stay hydrated
• Avoid alcohol on your first day
• Eat light meals
• Rest if needed

Our guides are trained to assist and monitor guests during high-altitude excursions.

Weather in Cusco & Machu Picchu

Peru has two main seasons in the Andes region:

Dry Season (May – September):
Clear skies, sunny days, cooler nights. Ideal for trekking.

Rainy Season (November – March):
Greener landscapes and fewer crowds, but frequent rain showers.

Machu Picchu has a humid microclimate, so a light rain jacket is recommended year-round.

Currency & Payments

The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN).

• ATMs are widely available in major cities.
• Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
• Small cash is recommended for local markets, tips, and small purchases.

Safety & Health

Peru is generally safe for travelers, especially in major tourist destinations such as Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

We recommend:

• Using registered transportation
• Avoiding displaying valuables
• Carrying a copy of your passport
• Having travel insurance that covers medical emergencies

Our tours include trained staff and emergency protocols for your safety.

What to Pack for Machu Picchu

• Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
• Lightweight waterproof jacket
• Sunscreen
• Hat and sunglasses
• Insect repellent
• Reusable water bottle
• Passport (mandatory for entry)

Time Zone

Peru operates on Peru Time (PET), which is GMT -5. There is no daylight saving time.

Electricity

Peru uses 220V, 60Hz. Plugs are typically Type A and Type C. We recommend bringing a universal adapter.

Happy Gringo Tours promotes sustainable and responsible tourism. We respect local communities, culture, and the environment. We encourage all travelers to:

• Reduce plastic waste
• Respect archaeological sites
• Support local businesses
• Follow guide instructions at all times
