Early Start & Hotel Pickup (Approx. 4:30 to 5:00 am)

We begin early. At approximately 4:30 am, our shuttle will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco. We head to the Cusipata region. We travel through foothills and small communities. We see local farms and herds of llamas and alpacas. We enjoy the fresh Andean air.

During the drive, you’ll learn from our tour guides about the region’s history, climate, and high-altitude conditions.

Arrival at Base & Horse Assignment (3 Hours from Cusco)

After roughly 3 hours of driving, we arrive at the Llactoc parking area (approx. 4,900 m). Here you’ll meet your horse and a local muleteer who will lead the horse and ensure your comfort. The terrain is now the mountain trails carved through puna grasslands and high-altitude plateaus.

Horseback Ride Uphill (55 to 60 Minutes)

Welcome to the true ride a horse to Rainbow Mountain segment. You’ll ride uphill through spectacular Andean landscapes toward the summit region.

During this time, you can see many things. Enjoy the wide views of the Red Valley. Look at the snowy peak of Ausangate. You can also see local villages and llamas and alpacas roaming freely. The pace is steady and guided; no prior riding experience necessary.

Short Hike to the Summit (5,036 m)

Near the top, horses cannot go further, so you dismount and walk the last 10-20 minutes on foot. This final mountain hike (just a short one) rewards you with the awe-inspiring view of Rainbow Mountain’s layered colors. At the summit, you’ll have time to pause, photograph, and soak it all in.
