Rainbow Mountain Tour & Red Valley Hike | Peru Day Trip
The Cusco to Rainbow Mountain Tour is a popular full-day tour in the Cusco region. Locally known as montaña de siete colores, the yellow, red, ochre, white, and turquoise mineral stripes on Rainbow Mountain Cusco lend it wow appeal. Due to the lack of rain and clear skies during the dry season, Rainbow Mountain Cusco can be thoroughly enjoyed.
Rainbow Mountain Cusco is the second most visited destination in the country after Machu Picchu.
From the summit, you will have a staggering 360-degree view, including nearby Snow-Capped Apu Ausangate Mountain (6384m), the highest mountain in southern Peru.
Rainbow Mountain Travel offers breathtaking views that easily allow you to forget about the 2-hour struggle you leave behind. The Ausangate glacier on one side and bizarre, colorful peaks on the other.
This memorable high-altitude hike in South America is an experience to remember forever! You will have the opportunity to click enough pictures to fill your social media feed.
After relishing the vires from the summit of Rainbow Mountain, Peru, the descent is just as spectacular. As the outstanding views slowly start to disappear, you maneuver your way back to the lunch spot through herds of alpacas, sheep, and Andean people in colorful clothes riding their horses.
A fresh, homemade buffet lunch will be served as we end the Cusco to Rainbow Mountain Tour.
We are a fully locally owned tour company in Cusco. To avoid altitude sickness, it is strongly recommended that you spend 2-3 days in Cusco before visiting Rainbow Mountain.
For further information, we highly recommend you read our detailed article about the Rainbow Mountains.
If you are unwilling to hike, look at our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Trip from Cusco. Alternatively, you can experience the vibrant beauty of Cusco’s Rainbow Mountain like never before with our thrilling and accessible ATV Rainbow Mountain Tour. It is perfect for all ages and fitness levels.

Your epic full-day trip to Rainbow Mountain, Peru, begins early in the morning at 0500, and we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will then embark on a three-hour drive along the South Valley of Cusco to the Hanchi Pacha community in Pitumarca Village.
Here, we will serve a traditional breakfast. After a short safety briefing, we will begin the Rainbow Mountain Trek, which will take us two and a half hours to the summit at 5030 meters (16502 ft.) above sea level.
Along the hike, you will see beautiful landscapes, Llamas, Alpacas, local people, and spectacular, colorful rocky mountains.
You will also be hiking through different highland Andean communities. Our tour guide will give you an immersive insight into their life and traditions.
Locals here practice a ritual called Apacheta. They pile stones on each other to honor the Mountain God (Apus). They then use three coca leaves (K’intu) to seek blessings. It is a belief that this would safeguard their path to the summit.
You can rent horses at the base camp if you are unsure about hiking at high altitudes. Make sure to negotiate the price before getting on one.
The Red Valley lies farther and can be hiked on a two-day trek.
After enjoying the seven-colored mountain, we will hike for two hours down the hill back to where we started the hike. Here, we will serve you lunch. After lunch, we will drive you back to Cusco City.
It is not recommended for people with heart problems or other serious medical conditions.
This tour operates in all weather conditions, so please dress appropriately.
Minimum age: 8 years old.
Not recommended for people over 60 years old.
It is not recommended for pregnant travelers.
Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level.
Not wheelchair accessible.
Higher elevation means very cold, nearly freezing temperatures. Wear very warm clothes and carry only the minimum gear to make the hike easier.
Bring coca leaves to help with altitude sickness.
Try to hike all the way to the main viewpoint. From there, you get a 360° view of Rainbow Mountain, the nearby glacier, and a stunning valley that many people miss by not going to the top.
The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, ideally right after sunrise or just before sunset.
The hike to the top is challenging. Constantly changing weather and high altitude can be tough even for experienced hikers, but with the right preparation it’s manageable for people who don’t hike often.
Do not go to Rainbow Mountain in the afternoon during the rainy season because of lightning. Due to the high concentration of minerals, there is a high risk of being struck by lightning.
In Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, you’ll find many agencies offering this tour “cheap,” but remember: you get what you pay for. Many of these tours take 25–35+ people with just one guide. We offer an exclusive small-group service, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 people per group.
Don’t forget the Rainbow Mountain passport stamp! It costs 2 soles.
Acclimatize in Cusco before your Rainbow Mountain hike. This is the best “insurance” for a smooth trip. We recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before the excursion.
Don’t forget water. Drinking plenty of water helps with altitude. Bring at least 2 liters per person for the hike and keep an extra bottle in the van for after.
Go to sleep early and avoid drinking or partying the night before. Pick-up is around 3:00 am, and the trek is physically demanding—much better without a hangover.
If you experience altitude sickness symptoms, descend as quickly as possible. Altitude sickness is serious and should not be ignored.
If you are visiting Machu Picchu the day before your Rainbow Mountain tour, ask your travel company to book an early return train ticket so you can rest.
If you plan to take a photo with locals and their llamas/alpacas, they typically expect a tip of 5 soles (around $2 USD).
This small contribution helps provide additional income to local families in the community.
Many local people wear their traditional clothing along the route. This is not just for tourists—it is a cultural custom that has been preserved for generations.
You may see locals herding llamas and alpacas in the area as part of their daily life.
At Rainbow Mountain, you’ll have the chance to take unique photos with alpacas and llamas.
Local residents often dress their animals with colorful ear tassels, and sometimes the llamas even wear sunglasses for fun pictures.
Rainbow Mountain is located at over 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) above sea level.
The best way to prepare is to arrive in Cusco at least 3 days before your visit.
We suggest this itinerary:
Day 1: Cusco city tour
Day 2: Sacred Valley
Day 3: Machu Picchu
Day 4: Rainbow Mountain as your final high-altitude experience
Drink plenty of water during your stay.
If you still feel the effects of altitude, you can take altitude sickness medication such as Diamox—as long as you are not allergic and it is recommended for you by a doctor.
The weather at Rainbow Mountain is very unpredictable.
It can go from sunny to cloudy, windy, and very cold in just a few minutes.
We recommend dressing in layers, so you can easily adjust:
Base layer: light, breathable clothing
Mid layer: warm fleece or sweater
Outer layer: waterproof and windproof jacket
Bring both warm clothes for cold conditions and lighter clothes for when the sun is strong.
Rainbow Mountain is a fragile and beautiful natural area.
As more travelers visit, it’s important to protect the environment for future generations.
The surroundings are home to unique plants and animals that can be easily damaged.
Please:
Stay on marked trails
Do not litter
Avoid disturbing wildlife
By being a responsible traveler, respecting local customs, and minimizing your impact, you help keep Rainbow Mountain as stunning as it is today.
Take it slow: Walk at a slow, steady pace to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the hike.
Take breaks: Listen to your body. If you feel tired, dizzy, or short of breath, stop and rest.
In a group service, you should understand that some people will walk faster or slower than you.
Usually, the group walks together for about 60% of the trail, since it’s mostly flat at the start.
On the final, steep section, groups often spread out naturally.
Those who arrive first at the summit should wait for the rest of the group so that the guide can give explanations and information to everyone together.
If there is a strike on the day of your departure, we will monitor the situation carefully.
If the roads are completely blocked, we will cancel your Rainbow Mountain trip and give you a full refund.
Your safety is our top priority.
We are happy to welcome solo travelers on our Rainbow Mountain tour.
Before booking, please send us a message via WhatsApp or email to confirm if there is an existing group you can join.

We recommend paying in cash to avoid extra fees.
